About the Department

The English Department at SYNERGY aspires to be a premier hub for academic excellence, linguistic diversity, and professional acumen, preparing students to excel as global professionals while enhancing their language proficiency and societal engagement. The department's mission encompasses delivering top-quality education, cultivating English communication proficiency, enhancing critical analysis skills, and equipping students with soft skills and career readiness. The curriculum includes courses like Communicative English, English for Technical Writing, and specialized labs focusing on pronunciation, professional communication, and technical writing. Since 2018, the syllabus has been restructured to include Communicative English and Communication Lab in the first semester and advanced business communication courses in the sixth semester. Currently, English for Technical Writing and Communicative English & Report Writing Lab are offered to first and second-semester students, while the Future Ready Contributor Program Lab in the sixth semester aims to improve employability and career readiness. The institute also boasts a Communicative Language Center to further train students in these competencies.

COURSE OUTCOMES: 1 ST SEMESTER COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH CODE – RCE1E001 (OLD SYLLABUS)

1. Understand the process, basic factors & types of communication, knowledge about fundamental concepts in English grammar and its rectification.

2. Identify the concepts of pronunciation, syllable division, stress, intonation, problem sounds and its application.

3. Enhance communication in a culturally diverse workforce, addressing biases and creating polished business documents for effective written communication.

4. Develop comprehensive workplace communication skills, encompassing impactful presentations, interview techniques, team management, leadership, group discussions, and public speaking.

COURSE OUTCOMES: 1 ST / 2 ND SEMESTER ENGLISH FOR TECHNICAL WRITING – CODE (23HS1002) (NEW SYLLABUS)

1.Achieve proficiency in engineering technical communication by understanding communication processes, its conceptual nature, and workplace relevance for engineers.

2. Demonstrate mastery of communicative grammar and enabling confident expression of ideas in both speech and writing using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.

3. Evaluate and improve communication fluency to become more effective and skilled communicators by acquiring proficiency in voice dynamics.

4. Develop proficiency in professional communication for the workplace, including flawless business correspondence such as formal letters, memos, notices, reports, as well as mastering CV writing and interview skills for effective employment communication.

COURSE OUTCOMES: 1 ST SEMESTER ENGLISH LANGUAGE LAB CODE – RCE1E201 (OLD SYLLABUS)

1. Understand and apply the sounds of English with precision, using correct stress, tone, and rhythm in listening, speaking, reading, and writing contexts.

2. Develop proficiency in communication through presentations, role-play, and one-on-one interactions, emphasizing word accent, intonation, and rhythm for improved pronunciation and increased vocabulary.

3. Equip students with the ability to use language effectively in professional scenarios such as interviews, group discussions overcoming communication barriers for successful public speaking..

4. Acquire practical skills in resume/CV preparation, report writing, and format creation, enhancing overall writing abilities.

5. Enhance reading comprehension skills for both technical and general texts, enabling students to extract, analyze, and synthesize information efficiently for academic and professional success.

COURSE OUTCOMES: 1 ST /2 ND SEMESTER COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH & REPORT WRITING LAB– CODE (23ES1204) (NEW SYLLABUS)

1. Develop strategic competence in utilizing both spoken and written language across a diverse array of communication strategies.

2. Maintain a high level of linguistic competence, ensuring accuracy in grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary usage.

3. Demonstrate the ability to speak English with proper pronunciation and intonation for effective communication.

4. Cultivate skills in making compelling oral presentations through the interpretation and analysis of data, pictures, and videos. Additionally, actively participate in group discussions on general topics to enhance communication proficiency.

5. To develop advanced listening and reading comprehension skills through targeted practice assignments, enabling students to effectively understand and interpret English in various contexts.

The rationale/objectives of Communicative English and Business Communication in English are as follows:-

It is a practice oriented, need-based, functional Communicative Course. The aim of the Course is to develop the students' skills of communication in listening, speaking and writing. The course also seeks to develop their habit of reading in an effective manner. Reading of newspaper, magazines and books in a free and extensive manner to consolidate the skill already achieved is also encouraged. Care is taken to enable students to achieve the skills of effective communication through a more interactive process of teaching/learning in the laboratory.
